Volunteer and Internship/Field Experience Opportunities at Harry Meyering Center
Volunteers play an important role at Harry Meyering Center. A variety of opportunities are available to those wishing to share their time and talents.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age or have written parent/guardian approval. An orientation is required. A background check may be requested depending upon the volunteer opportunity. A TB screening may be necessary.
Opportunity 1: Leisure/Recreation Volunteer/Intern
HMC is always searching for volunteers to teach our consumers new skills and hobbies in a group or house setting.
1A Volunteers will primarily participate in leisure and recreational activities with one specific site. Hours of service are generally between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and between 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. All hours must take place when a Site Supervisor is present. Volunteers should plan on coming for at least 2-hour time slots unless other arrangements have been made with the Site Supervisor. Examples of activities include: card making, scrapbooking, game night, craft club, walks, music/karaoke, Wii, crafts and sewing.
1B Volunteer to work with an artistic individual during Craft Club which is the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. Prefer a volunteer with an interest in a wide variety of crafts and artistic areas (i.e.: watercolor, photography, painting, sketching, latch hook, scrapbooking, knitting/crocheting).
Opportunity 2: Social Work Intern/Volunteer {Jr. & Sr. Level}
Hours are flexible, evening and/or weekend hours may be necessary at times. Responsibilities may include: 1. Conduct program assessment, development, and evaluation 2. Research and train on relevant topics 3. Participate in committees, teamings, etc. 4. Network with community resources 5. Support consumers in leisure and recreation activities 6. Work with volunteers and Service-Learning students 7. Take part in public relations efforts 8. Help with training info for new staff
Opportunity 3: Social and Psychological Services Intern/Volunteer
Hours are flexible with a minimum of a once a week commitment. Volunteer will work with QMRP (Qualified Mental Retardation Professional) in the development, analysis, and implementation of teaching behavioral management programs for persons with disabilities. Intern will participate in individual and interdisciplinary planning sessions, unit development, and calculating behavior data.
Opportunity 4: Community Social Services Intern/Volunteer
Hours are flexible, evening and/or weekend hours may be necessary, Responsibilities may include:
1. Recruitment, hiring, orientation, and scheduling procedures
2. Review policies and procedures
3. Attend meetings: leadership, staff, teamings, regulatory
4. Support plan/program development, implementation, evaluation, and assessment
5. Attend trainings and receive certifications if applicable
6. Develop skills of individuals served
Opportunity 5: Staff Development Intern/Volunteer
Primary duties include assisting the Staff Development Director with the updating of existing training materials and/or development of new training materials. May include tasks related to forms or tracking of training needs, correspondence with employees and/or supervisors related to training.
Opportunity 6: Human Resources Intern(s)
Typical hours: Monday – Fridya 8 AM – 4:30 PM, weekends and other times as scheduled.
Responsibilities may include: 1. Observe and/or participate in hiring process

Opportunity 7:Community Health Intern/Volunteer
Hours are flexible; evening and weekend hours may be necessary at times.
Responsibilities may include:
1. Plan and implement programs (with supervision.) Example: work with a QMRP on a medication program.
2. Identify health care needs of individuals served. Do a general survey of individual(s) to become familiar with needs and understand how these needs are alike and different for other populations.
3. Research and develop written materials. Ideas might include: developing questions on infection control to be used as Jeopardy or Family Feud or providing information on a new diagnosis.
4. Develop and offer presentations on a community health topic applicable to needs of individuals served.
5 Design and run an activity. To make it health related, the activity should relate to exercise, diets, or be informative.
6. Participate in meetings such as leadership, staff, teamings, and regulatory.
Opportunity 7: Nutrition and Dietary Assessment Intern/Volunteer
Typical hours will be Monday through Friday; hours will vary according to Food Services Supervisor’s availability. Responsibilities may include:
1. Complete assessments of dietary needs and nutritional intakes of HMC’s programs.
2 Research the possibility of and mechanisms needed for institutional purchasing.
3. Develop workshop(s) for in-service credit.
4. Apply knowledge and skills to an on-site food and nutrition work experience.
5. Develop communication, interpersonal and professional skills in an employer – employee setting.
6. Apply educational techniques, methods, and materials to realistic situations.
7. Communicate with and observe the dietitian.
Opportunity 8: Clothing tender (mending and ironing)
Individuals needed for small mending projects and for ironing name labels into clothing. Hours flexible. Work at own pace. Able to sit while working on projects. Equipment provided.
